This free 5 week course offered by the WEA in partnership with the Great Central Railway offers an opportunity to learn new research skills or extend those you already have by exploring some of the history of the Great Central Railway (GCR). Tutor Cynthia Brown
A major new museum in Birstall is planned on the outskirts of Leicester. We will base the course
on two aspects of the history of the GCR: the men and women who worked for the railway, and the experiences of the passengers who used it.
We will use hands-on examples, including Census returns, newspapers and railway records to explore historical sources that can tell us more, as well as identifying places where you can access relevant records yourself, both in person and online. At the end of the course you should have both the knowledge and confidence to continue your own research independently. No previous research experience is needed – just an enquiring mind and an interest in the subject.
